Daria Kasatkina put on a solid show to avenge her Sydney semifinal loss to Paula Badosa in the Round of 16 in Rome on Thursday.
The Russian, ranked No. 23 in the world, came back from a break down thrice in the first set, before breaking a fourth time in the ninth game and then holding serve to take the first set.
Both player’ struggle to hold serve continued in the second set, which began with five consecutive breaks. Three of those belonged to Kasatkina, who didn’t throw away the advantage and held serve for the rest of the match to beat the World No. 3, 6-4, 6-4.
The win follows a come-from-behind three-set win over Leylah Fernandez in the second round and a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tamara Zidansek in the opener.
As a result of three victories Kasatkina has now made it to a maiden quarterfinal in Rome in what is her seventh appearance.
A three-time champion on the tour, Kasatkina reached four finals last season, finishing with a 2-2 record. She is 17-9 overall this season, with her best being semifinal finishes in Melbourne and Sydney. Can she make the final four a third time in 2022?

Teichmann Overcomes Rybakina in Three
World No. 29 Jil Teichmann bounced back after losing the first set to topple Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in a close to three hour contest on Thursday.
The Swiss left-hander lost the first set in the tiebreak, but she edged past the World No. 17 in the next two sets to win the contest 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 7-5. Teichmann had 20 breaking opportunities in the match and she converted nine of them. Her opponent held 17 break points with Teichmann saving 11 of them.
A semifinalist in Madrid last week, this is the first time that the 24-year-old has gone beyond the first round in Rome and now she is just two wins away from a second WTA 1000 final. Last year, she finished runner-up in Cincinnati to Ashleigh Barty.
Thursday’s win was the second consecutive three-set victory for Teichmann, who had ousted Karolína Pliskova 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the second round on Wednesday. She had begun the tournament with a straight sets win over Jasmine Paolini.

This will be a very close contest, with Teichmann edging past Kasatkina for a second consecutive WTA 1000 semifinal spot.
