Soonwoo Kwon v Yosuke Watanaki Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the two 24 year olds.

Kwon Saves Match Point Against the Slovenian

Kwon had been struggling for form coming into Lyon and, for large parts of his match with Aljaz Bedene, the world number 175, it looked like he was destined to make another early exit from a tournament.

Bedene, who has missed a lot of tennis after contracting Covid last year, dropped his serve in his opening service game, but then recovered to level. The Slovenia then saved seven more break points and Kwon was made to regret not converting any of them, when he dropped his serve, giving Bedene the first set.

Again Kwon was the first to break in the second set, but Bedene recovered that and then moved a break ahead.

Serving to stay in the match, Kwon had to save a match point, but then found the inner resolve to break back, and eventually force a tie-break, which he went on to win.

Perhaps it was because of the disappointment, but Bedene’s conviction deserted him after that, and Kwon was able to take the third set without dropping another game, sealing the win with his third match point.

Lucky Loser Watanuki Upsets Spanish Seed

Watanuki owes his place in the main draw in Lyon to a slice of good fortune. He was actually beaten in the second round of qualifying, but was given another chance as a lucky loser.

And he took full advantage with a surprise first round win over Pedro Martinez of Spain, the winner of the Santiago Open and world number 43, who was the number eight seed in Lyon.

The first set was scrappy with the pair swapping breaks not once but twice. The Spanish player, though, kept his nerve in the tie-break and the first set belonged to him.

Martinez dropped his serve, though, in the opening game of the second set, and, although he had opportunities, was never able to recover the deficit, and the match was level again.

And he put himself on the back foot by dropping his serve again at the start of the third set. When Watanuki followed that up with another break, the match was as good as over, and soon the Japanese man could celebrate a famous victory.

Kwon v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

Kwon had to dig deep to beat the Slovenian, but he is playing a lucky loser not used to playing in senior ATP events, The South Korean’s greater experience should count.
