Rune Battles Past Rinderknech

Holger Rune needed two hours and three minutes to see off France’s Arthur Rinderknech in the first round in Lyon on Sunday.

Rune had seven breaking chances in the match but he could take just one of them. His opponent capitalised on the only break point opportunity. But it was the 19-year-old Dane, who dominated both the tiebreaks to win the contest 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3).

Rune has been enjoying a terrific clay court season. He won his maiden title in Munich at the start of this month and Sunday’s win over Rinderknech was his sixth consecutive tour-level victory.

Rune had also won the Challenger title in Sanremo in April and had reached the second rounds in monte-Carlo and Belgrade. Overall, the Dane is 10-9 at the tour-level and 8-5 on clay this season. Can he keep the winning run going?

Mannarino Knocks Out Karatsev

Adrian Mannarino extended Aslan Karatsev’s woes on clay this season as the Frenchman knocked out the Russian in the first round on Sunday.

Mannarino held off the sixth seed 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 in a two-hour-and-17-minute battle.

Karatsev, who defaulted 11 times in the match, has a 1-5 record on clay this season. Mannarino was on the brink of losing the first set as the Russian had built a 1-5 lead with a double break. But he couldn’t close out the set. Mannarino made a solid comeback, saving three set points and forcing the tiebreak. The Frenchman saved one more set point in the tiebreak before converting his second and going one-set up.

After all the drama in the first, there was only one break of serve in the second which fell to Mannarino in the fifth game and he held on to the lead to advance.

This is the 33-year-old lefty’s first win in Lyon. He had lost his opening round in 2018.

This is also Mannarino’s first win on clay this season. He was on a six-match losing streak, including three qualifiers. The win would have been a huge confidence booster for him.

Rune v Mannarino Prediction and Tip

Rune is in excellent form at the moment and it will be a huge task for Mannarino to stop the Dane. Expect Rune to advance to another quarterfinal.
