After failing to win her first three matches on clay this season, Viktorija Golubic has won two in a row to reach the last eight in Strasbourg.
The 29-year-old Swiss will be competing in her second quarterfinal of the season on Thursday. Her first had ended in a three-set loss to Simona Halep at the Melbourne Summer Set 1.
Ranked No. 60 in the world, Golubic had begun her campaign with a 6-0, 6-4 drubbing of Germany’s Yana Morderger. On Wednesday, she looked impressive again as she rolled past France’s Fiona Ferro 6-4, 6-2.
Golubic saved four of six break points and converted five of nine to win in an hour and 36 minutes. Her first round win was a bit unusual as Morderger lost all eight of her service games in the match, but broke Golubic four times in the second set after getting bageled in the first. The Swiss will be relieved that she was able to play better in the second set against Fero.
A Wimbledon quarterfinalist last year, Golubic has not reached a semifinal since finishing runner-up in Monterrey in 2021. Can she reach the final four with a win Thursday?

Dodin Breezes Past Makarova
World No. 94 Oceane Dodin had a tough start to her campaign on Monday, but she breezed past Ekaterina Makarova in the second round on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old Frenchwoman needed just an hour and 28 minutes to dispatch the Russian 6-2, 6-1 and reach her first WTA 250 quarterfinal since the Palermo Open last year.
Dodin saved all four break points that she faced in the match, while converting five of seven to win consecutive matches for the first time at the tour level this year. She had made it to the semifinals of the WTA 125 in Marbella in April.
While her win over Makarova came in quick time, she had to sweat it out against Ana Konjuh in the first round. The Croatian, who is ranked 28 places higher than Dodin had recovered after losing the first set to force the decider, but eventually fell to Dodin in a two hour and eight minute contest.
Golubic v Dodin Prediction and Tip
Golubic is the superior player and she will be expected to win. Dodin could take a set off the Swiss though.
