Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune v Manuel Guinard Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 19-year old Dane, and the Frenchman, who is seven years older.

Rune Defeats French Opposition to Make the Last Eight

Rune is playing in his second event since winning his first senior ATP title in Munich.

And he has got to this stage by twice beating French opposition, beginning with Arthur Rinderknech, the world number 65, who he beat in straight sets in the first round, courtesy of two tie-breaks.

In the second round, he met Adrian Mannarino, a man 16 years older than him with much more experience on the senior tour, but he dealt with the challenge of the world number 73 comparatively easy.

Serve was largely on top in the first set, but it was Rune who capitalised on the first break opportunity offered. He was able to consolidate that advantage to take the set.

It was much the same story in the second set, one break enough for the Dane to seize the initiative. Mannarino did have the chance to break back, could not take it, and Rune underlined his dominance with another break to wrap up the match.

Guinard Battles Past Lucky Loser

Guinard probably did not expect to reach the quarter-finals when he entered the tournament in Lyon, but he will be relishing what is a new experience for a man more used to the demands of the Challenger tour.

He defeated compatriot Hugo Gaston, the world number 68, in the first round in three sets, and then was drawn against the American world number 179, Michael Mmoh, who had already been the recipient of two pieces of good fortune.

First by earning a reprieve as a Lucky Loser after being knocked out in the second round of qualifying, and then getting a bye straight through to the second round after his proposed opponent withdrew from the event.

The first set was very scrappy – Mmoh went a break down, recovered to lead, and was pegged back again, only to move a break up again after a marathon ninth game that featured nine deuces before the American won it. He went on to claim the first set.

Guinard was the first to break serve in the second set, but missed the chance to claim it on his serve, when he dropped his serve in turn. However, he broke again next game and the match was level again.

It was Mmoh who was the first to strike in the third set, but Guinard had just recovered that break when the light faded and the match had to be suspended.

The overnight rest seemed to benefit the Frenchman more than the American because, when they resumed on Thursday afternoon, Guinard held to love, and then forced two match points, the second of which he converted.

Rune v Guinard Prediction and Tip

Rune has already shown his liking for playing French opponents in Lyon and, given Guinard is the lowest ranked of the three he has played so far, should not present him with too many difficulties.

Tip: Rune to win in straight sets: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
