Garbiñe Muguruza v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and that came way back in 2014. Muguruza had defeated Kanepi in the first round of that edition of Australian Open in three sets.

Muguruza’s Surprising Struggles in 2022

Muguruza looked to have regained her form after having gone through a rut prior to last year. This season, however, the world number 10 has faced a lot of resistance in her upward movement.

The Spaniard, who won three WTA titles last season, has won just seven of the 15 matches she’s played this year. On clay, this record is worse, with the Spaniard sitting on a 2-3 win-loss record, having lost early in each of the three tournaments she’s played.

At Madrid, Muguruza fell to a second round rout at the hands of Anhelina Kalinina, then lost a three-setter in her opener in Rome to Yulia Putintseva before finishing second to Martina Trevisan at Rabat in the week before this French Open.

This kind of a showing on clay should come as a surprise for the former French Open winner but then again, she is barely defending any points coming into this edition having also lost in the first round here last season.

Can she turn things around for both, her season and her showing at Roland-Garros?

Kanepi Re-Rising in the Ranks

She is 36, in the twilight of her career and was ranked 115th in the world in January. Kanepi is now 46th, and steadily rising up following a string of solid performances all season.

This includes a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open, third round showings at both Indian Wells and Miami and some solid performances on clay that followed.

At Charleston, Kanepi reached the third round before she lost, surprisingly one might add, to Magda Linette there. A second round appearance as a qualifier at Madrid followed soon after and Kanepi then reached the semifinal at the WTA 125 competition in Paris last week.

With form on her side, Kanepi should start off here against her struggling Spaniard opponent with some confidence under her belt.

Muguruza v Kanepi Prediction and Tip

While Muguruza is a favourite here, one would expect a world number 10 to go in at much shorter odds than 3/5 to win this French Open opener against a player ranked 46th who is also 36 years of age. Backing Kanepi to win a set here.
