Kaia Kanepi v Beatriz Haddad Maia Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Kanepi Upsets Muguruza

At 36 years of age, Kaia Kanepi is among the oldest players on the WTA Tour at the moment but given the kind of tennis she has been playing, it seems like she is hitting her stride again.

Now ranked World No. 46, the Estonian has developed a reputation for carving upsets on big stages. In the Australian Open this year, she stormed into the quarterfinal after beating players like Angelique Kerber and Aryna Sabalenka.

Later, she reached the third round in Miami, Indian Wells, and Charleston to take her overall tally for the season to 17-7.

Now in Paris, where she is a two-time quarterfinalist, Kanepi has continued in the same vein. In the opener, she upset the number 10 seed and 2016 Roland Garros champion Garbine Muguruza 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was a resilient performance from the unseeded veteran, who has effectively opened up the bracket with that win.

For what it is worth, this is not entirely surprising from Kanepi. She did arrive for the Slam with some momentum under her belt, having reached the semifinal in Paris Challenger.

Maia Survives Bucsa

Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia has done well to post her best showing in the French Open. Ranking just two places below Kanepi, she dismissed the Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucșa 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in the opener to reach round two here for the first time in her career.

She has had a pretty impressive season so far; her tally stands at an impressive 23-11 with most of those wins coming on clay courts.

Maia last featured in the Saint-Malo and Paris Challengers; she reached the final in both those tournaments and won the title in the former.

The 25-year-old has been just as impressive (if not more) on the doubles circuit. She took the doubles crown in Paris with Kristina Mladenovic while earlier in the season, she won the Sydney International and reached the final in the Australian Open with Anna Dalinina.

Clearly, Beatriz is sailing high on confidence, momentum, and energy. She is at her career-best ranking and will certainly fancy her chances of a deep run in the tournament.

Kanepi v Maia Prediction and Tip

This match can swing either way. Convention dictates Maia to be the favourite owing to her relatively younger age and recent form but Kanepi has proven that age is no barrier – especially on a big stage like the French Open.

This will be a cracker of a game – one where we may see a fair number of games.
