Sorana Cirstea v Sloane Stephens Head to Head

It is an advantage for Cirstea at the moment with 1-0; however, that sole win over the American came back in the 2013 WTA Dubai.

Stephens Struggling on Clay

Sloane Stephens has been struggling a fair bit with her form over the last couple of seasons; since reaching the final here at the Roland Garros and WTA Finals in 2018, the former World No. 3 has failed to deliver. As a result, the slump has knocked her out of the top 50, down to the 64th spot at the moment.

The rut has continued this season as well; her tally as of Tuesday stands at 7-7 with a good chunk of those wins coming in Guadalajara, where she bagged her seventh singles title.

Apart from that, Stephens has lost her first-round bout in the Australian Open, Indian Wells Open, and her four clay tournaments in Charleston, Madrid, Rome, and Strasbourg. A few of those losses have been rather surprising, coming at the hands of players like Qinwen Zheng and Nefisa Berberovic.

In the French Open too, the 29-year-old was seen struggling in her first-round match with Jule Niemeier. It took Stephens three sets to claim the win with 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Cirstea Starts Strong

Sorana Cirstea is off to a much better start in Paris as she dismissed Tatjana Maria in straight sets with 6-3, 6-3.

The number 26 seed reached the fourth round here last season – after spending almost a decade losing in the preceding rounds. Her best result in a major came in Paris itself in 2009 when she reached the quarterfinal.

With a tally of 14-12, Cirstea has had a much better spell that Stephens in 2022. She reached the semifinal in a couple of events in Lyon and Istanbul, and also the fourth round in Indian Wells and the Australian Open.

That said, she did lose her opening-round games in Madrid, Rome, and Strasbourg – respectively to Nuria Parrizas Diaz, Ons Jabeur, and Ekaterina Makarova.

Cirstea v Stephens Prediction and Tip

World No. 26 Cirstea will start as the odds-on favourite here. She has a fair bit of momentum and trust to pull this off.

However, she hasn’t been the most consistent performer on the tour this year and that does not instill a lot of confidence from a betting perspective – especially when she is up against a two-time Grand Slam finalist.

Stephens can pull this off, provided she believes in herself and plays a disciplined match. Risk takers can back the American while on a safer side, we may be looking at yet another long affair.
