Daniil Medvedev v Laslo Djere Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came on the clay courts of Budapest in 2017 where Djere managed to get past Medvedev, winning 6-0, 5-5 with the Russian player retiring from the encounter.

He is the world number two but as far as his record on clay goes, it’s nothing to write home about. Not by any standards, let alone a player ranked that high in the world.
Case in point is his 15-22 career win-loss record on this surface and the fact that when he did make it to the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros last year, he had won his first match at the tournament in five attempts.
This season too, Medvedev had featured in just one match on clay coming into this French Open, losing his opener at the Geneva Open to Richard Gasquet.
Which is why a win as solid as the one he registered over Facundo Bagnis, a 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 rout of his Argentinian opponent is exactly what he needed to get going in this tournament. Djere Tames Berankis in Straight Sets
As far as form on clay goes, Djere looked to have done well coming into this competition. And he showed why he had gone as an overwhelming favourite against Ricardas Berankis in his opener, with a performance to remember.
Djere needed just two hours and five minutes to get past Berankis, winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to seal off a second round berth.
Two early breaks of serves in the first set ensured the late break against him didn’t affect Djere too much, and an early break in the second sealed off the Serb’s two-love lead in the match.
Berankis showed some fight by racing off to a 2-0 lead in the third set but that was about as close as it got. Djere broke back immediately and then again to carve out a straight-set win.
