Tsitispas Survives First Round Scare

Last year’s runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas rebounded after losing the first two sets to beat Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti and stay alive in the tournament.

The Greek, who struggled in the first two sets, upped the level in the last three to win the three-hour-and-34-minute contest  5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.

The World No. 4 has been in terrific form this year. Tuesday’s win was his 32nd of the season. He is 15-3 on clay and won his second Masters title when he defended his crown in Monte Carlo in April. He was also a finalist in Rome and a semifinalist in Madrid.

On Tuesday, Tsitsipas converted 8 of 19 break points and saved 6 of 11. He had hit 64 winners, made 36 unforced errors and won 74% points on his first serve to start with a comeback win.

Given his brilliant form he should only get better from here on.

Kolar Impresses on Debut

World No. 134 Zdenek Kolar of the Czech Republic made an impressive main draw debut at the majors on Tuesday as he knocked out French wild card Lucas Pouille in four sets.

A clay court specialist, the Czech, who has won six of his seven Challenger and Futures titles on the surface, needed just under three hours to beat Pouille 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

While he got broken four times in the match, Kolar converted 6 of 7 break points. The 25-year-old, who was making his debut at the French Open, had qualified for the main draw with wins over Federico Gaio, Altuğ Çelikbilek and Franco Agamenone.

He kept that winning momentum going in the first round. He was the only one to break in the opening set, and also went a break up in the second, but Pouille won the last four games to draw level. The third and fourth sets were extremely competitive with both players exchanging an early break before Kolar got the decisive break late in both the sets.
