Three-time French Open finalist Simona Halep commenced her 2022 campaign in Paris with a three-set win over the lucky loser Nastasja Schunk of Germany. The Romanian was tested but she came out stronger at the end with 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 after a brief lapse in concentration.
After battling form woes and injury scare for the better part of last season, the former world number one finds herself on a resurgent path this year. She won her first singles title since September 2020 in Melbourne and followed it with a semifinal stint in Dubai and Indian Wells.
Later on, the 30-year-old also reached the quarterfinal in Madrid while in Rome, her journey was ended in round two by Danielle Collins.
Halep, now ranking World No. 19, is looking more and more herself with every match she plays. She is in good spirits – physically and mentally – and is quite primed to deliver another deep run in Roland Garros.
This energy and confidence are much needed as her prospective opponents in the coming matches can be Jelena Ostapenko, followed by the mighty Iga Swiatek.

Zheng Continues to Impress
Playing in her first-ever French Open, 19-year-old Qinwen Zheng started with a positive 6-3, 6-1 win over Maryna Zanevska.
The youngster has made quite a progress on the tour this season; she started off outside the 120 and now finds herself ranked at the #74 spot. Her highlights entail an ITF title in Orlando and a second-round stint in the Australian Open as a qualifier.
However, it is fair to say that Zheng’s form is a work in progress and the same is evident from her early exits in Miami, Charleston, and Madrid to Magda Linette, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Karolina Muchova respectively.
While Zheng has some experience on clay and can put up a fight, she will need to bring her A-game to take on Halep.
Halep v Zheng Prediction and Tip
Halep is the favourite and should do well to reach the third round. However, she may be challenged and pushed to three sets once again. After all, Zheng has the energy needed for a demanding surface like clay. However, it is hard to imagine her surpassing the Romanian, barring her opponent having a bad day at work.
