Marin Cilic v Gilles Simon Head to Head

They played 7 times before with Simona winning six of those. The last one came in 2018 in Pune with Simon winning 1-6 6-3 6-2.

Cilic Winning On Clay

Marin Cilic was never the best on clay but this year in Paris he won two matches dropping only one set. The win over Marton Fucsovics was particularly impressive as he dropped the first set.

Cilic is known as a player whose game can go up and down quite a lot during a match so for him to come back and win after dropping the first set was significant. Even more so against a solid player like Fucsovics. He blasted 57 winners to only 32 mistakes in that match which is very very good.

His win over Atilla Balasz in round one was another good one but the Hungarian has not played in a while so won’t count that. Cilic is having a solid year and he won a couple of very good matches on clay. If he can keep his cool against Simon he will be the favourite.

The track record is not that good so he will need to be really sharp to win this one. Keep reading to find out if he will.

Simon’s Swan Song

Gilles Simon indicated recently that he will retire this year although he did not specify when. Rumours have said that he might do it after this event and his play in Paris is adding fuel to that narrative.

He is playing by far the best tennis he has played this year, maybe even more. Despite the recent struggles of Pablo Carreno Busta beating him at age 37 is quite something. Even more so because he was down a break in that decider set.

He did not complicate things against Steve Johnson beating him in three sets. It was a lengthy match though so all that playing time is certainly not doing him any good. His game is the typical Simon game. Return every ball and make it hard for your opponent to hit a winner.

Both Johnson and Busta were baited into many errors by Simon and he will try to do that against Cilic as well. Historically he’s had plenty of success with that so he will try again. Maybe this Swan Song continues for him.

Cilic v Simon Prediction and Tip

So Cilic has dominated this matchup historically losing only once. It’s quite clear why. He forces Cilic to outhit him and Cilic lacks the patience to do so smartly. With the Croatians known tendency to go up and down during a match it’s the perfect mix to beat him.

Simon will try that again but it’s unclear whether he will be able to do so. He’s quite old with two very long matches on his back already. On the other hand, Cilic has looked quite sharp and determined. Simon can win but I don’t think he will. He might steal a set but I think Cilic will overwhelm him in the end. He simply has too many weapons.

Tip: Cilic to win in four sets: 4/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
