World no. 7 Aryna Sabalenka marched into the third round for the third time at Roland Garros. The Belarusian, who is yet to go past the Round of 32 at the clay court major, defeated America’s Madison Brengle in straight sets on Thursday.
Dominating the proceedings from the start, Sabalenka took the first set by breaking her opponent twice. She also broke Brengle thrice in the second to wrap up the match in just 64 minutes.
Sabalenka, who lost to Iga Swiatek in Rome, was also a finalist in Stuttgart in what is turning out to be a very good clay court season for her so far.
She had begun her Roland Garros challenge with a come-from-behind win over France’s Chloé Paquet.

Giorgi Knocks Out Putintseva
Just like Sabalenka, Camila Giorgi, too, had to rally to win her opening round match against China’s Zhang Shuai. But she needed just two sets to dispatch a tough second round opponent in Yulia Putintseva.
Both Giorgi and Putintseva had 6 break points in the match with the Italian converting four and saving four on her way to beating the Kazakh 6-3, 7-5.
The 30-year-old World No. 30 was 0-3 on clay in 2022 before the start of the tournament, but two wins in the first two rounds would have fired her up.
Giorgi, who won the Canadian Open title last year, is into the third round at Roland Garros for the second time. 2018 was the only year when she went past the first two rounds at the French Open.
Giorgi had beaten Zhang 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round.
