U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez edged out  Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic in the third round on Friday to reach the last 16 at Roland Garros for the first time in her career.

Both players converted 6 of 13 break points in the match, with the Swiss breaking twice in each of the three sets but it was the Canadian who got a decisive third break in the first and third sets.

The match which lasted two hours and 49 minutes ended with Fernandez winning 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

The World No. 18 Fernandez had won her first two rounds in straight sets, beating Kristina Mladenovic and Kateřina Siniaková respectively.

Anisimova Advances After Muchova Withdrawal

Facing Fernandez in the fourth round will be 20-year-old Amanda Anisimova, who won her third round match after her opponent Karolína Muchová retired in the third set due to an ankle injury.

Anisimova, who had beaten Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-4 in the first round and Donna Vekić 6-4, 6-1 in the second, lost the opening set in the tiebreak against Muchova, despite building a 1-5 lead. She came back in the second set as Muchova started showing signs of the injury. The Czech player, who had beaten Maria Sakkari in the last round, eventually pulled out while trailing 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 0-3.

This is the second time in her fifth main draw appearance that Anisimova has reached the last 16 at Roland Garros. She made it to the semifinals in 2019.

Ranked no. 20th in the world, Anisimova is enjoying a terrific season. She won the title in Melbourne and has been extremely good on clay as well, making it to the semifinals in Charleston and the quarterfinals in Madrid and Rome.
