Jessica Pegula v Irina Camelia Begu Head to Head

Begu has beaten Pegula in each of their two meetings on pro tour. One of those came on the hard courts of Melbourne Summer Set 2 earlier this year.

Pegula Ends Zidansek’s Interest

American Jessica Pegula has been on fire on the European clay this year, as she improved to 10-3 on the surface with a solid win over last year’s semifinalist Tamara Zidansek.

The number 11 seed breezed past Zidansek in the first set as the 24-year-old struggled mightily to hold serve. Pegula broker her serve four times, closing out the set in half an hour.

Pegula, a finalist in Madrid earlier this month, broke Zidansek five times in the match. And after the pair of them exchanged breaks early in the second set, she had to halt the Slovenian’s comeback in the second set tiebreak.

Pegula, who had trouble closing out her last two matches, in which she needed a grand total of 18 match points, did not have a recurrence in the third round as her opponent’s error-strewn performance handed her a route into the second week of the French Open for the first time.

Begu Too Good for Jeanjean

Irina Camelia Begu rolled into the Round of 16 of Roland Garros for the first time in six years as she defeated French wild card Leolia Jeanjean 6-1 6-4.

Begu was broken once in the match and saved a whopping 11 breakpoints as the fairytale run of French wild card Leolia Jeanjean came to an end. Jeanjean had posted the finest win of her career when she stunned Karolina Pliskova in the previous round but had no answer to the Romanian’s versatility and court coverage.

Begu overcame a jittery opening game and began to play freely thereafter, romping to a 5-1 lead quickly before wrapping up the set. In the second set, Jeanjean tried to stay on par with the Romanian, but it wasn’t for long as every short ball was punished.

Begu fired twice as many winners and registered fewer unforced errors as compared to her opponent who was clearly not past her emotional win over Pliskova.

Pegula v Begu Prediction and Tip

Pegula has been on a tear on the clay and should be the clear favorite to scale her latest hurdle.
