Kasatkina’s Dominant Run Continues

Daria Kasatkina marched into a second French Open quarterfinal after another dominating performance on Monday.

The Russian, ranked No. 20 in the world, has not dropped a set over the first four rounds. In fact she has been broken just twice leading up to the quarterfinals.

In the Round of 16 clash against Camila Giorgi on Monday, Kasatkina saved all six of the break points that she faced and converted half of the eight that she held to win 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 20 minutes.

The Russian, who has never reached the final four stage at a Grand Slam, will be aiming to reach a fourth semifinal of the season, following her run to the last four in Melbourne , Sydney and Rome.

The 2018 quarterfinalist began her campaign with a 6-2, 6-0 win over lucky loser Rebecca Šramková and then knocked out qualifier Fernanda Contreras Gomez 6-0, 6-3 in Round 2.

She continued her dominance in the third round, dispatching Shelby Rogers 6-3, 6-2. It’s been an effortless journey for Kasatkina so far. Will she keep the momentum going in the quarterfinal?

Kudermetova Rallies Past Keys

No. 29 seed Veronika Kudermetova fought back from a set down to beat 22nd seed Madison Keys of the U.S. on Monday and move into a maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Keys outplayed the Russian in the first set, but the latter made a strong comeback over the next two, breaking the American once in the second set and four times in the third to win the one-hour-and-41-minute contest 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.

This is the second time that she has won a three-setter at Roland Garros this year, having also begun her campaign with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over China’s Zhu Lin.

Kudermetova scored a straight sets win over Aleksandra Krunić in the second round and then advanced into the fourth round after her third round opponent Paula Badosa retired while trailing 3-6, 1-2.

Kudermetova, who had never gone past the third round of a major before, improved to 20-10 in a season where she has already featured in three finals, in Melbourne, Dubai and Istanbul.

Their last meeting was a three set-affair, which saw Kasatkina bounce back from a set down to advance to St. Petersburg semifinal last year. Expect a similar drama as the two Russians vie for a maiden Grand Slam semifinal spot. Kasatkina should once again come through in three sets.
