Viktorija Golubic v Heather Watson live Head to Head

It’s advantage 1-0 Watson who last defeated the Swiss on the grass courts in Birmingham in 2021; she prevailed in three sets.

Watson Knocks Out Volynets

Heather Watson began her journey on the grass swing with an emphatic, 6-4, 6-2 win over Katie Volynets in the opening round of the Nottingham Open.

The 30-year-old needed a little over an hour and a half to sail through on the back of a 64 percent first service win rate. That said, her service game was quite off as she managed to get it right on the first attempt only 54 percent of the time.

Now ranking World No. 102, Watson faces a stiff challenge in Golubic and going by the looks of things, it is going to be a huge ask of her to carve the upset.

Most of Heather’s defeats this season have come at the hands of players ranked well above her (even though many of them are ranking between 50 to 100).

In Strasbourg and Saint-Malo Challenger, she lost early to the likes of Magda Linette and Madison Brengle. Similarly, in Madrid, she lost in the qualifiers to Varvara Gracheva. And in Charleston, she was beaten by Claire Liu in the first round.

Watson made it to the same stage in Nottingham last season too although, her campaign then was ended by Katie Boulter.

Golubic Benefits from Raducanu Retirement

Viktorija Golubic sailed into the second round without much effort. Facing the local favourite, the number two seed Emma Raducanu, the Swiss took a 4-3 lead in the first set before the World No. 11 retired citing injury.

That has effectively opened up the bracket for the 29-year-old, who is now ranked #55 and has endured a slow clay swing. With two wins in the five events, Golubic will be keen on delivering a turnaround in the next few weeks.

For what it’s worth, she did reach the quarterfinal in Wimbledon last season to post her best Grand Slam tally. Since then, Viktorija has come a long way and has made some noticeable gains on the tour. Her overall record for the season is 10-13 with the highlight being her fourth-round stint in Indian Wells.

Golubic v Watson Prediction and Tip

Watson may have the support of the crowd but Golubic has a rhythm to her game and a superior tour experience. She may be challenged but at the end, the Swiss should sail into the next round comfortably.

Tip: Golubic to Win, Over 20.5: 8/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
