Medvedev Has Hiccup In Hertogenbosch Final

Daniil Medvedev will return to world number one in the ATP rankings on Monday.

Returning to the tour after a two month hernia lay-off, the Russian mentioned playing three grass court tournaments ahead of the unfortunate Wimbledon ban that will see him miss the third major of the year.

It was a good week for Medvedev at Hertgenbosch being pushed in the early rounds and prevailing. The Russian looked convincing in his semis against title holder Adrian Mannarino and was a strong favorite in the final against unheralded Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven.

Ranked outside the top 200 in the world, the Dutchman won his first ever ATP singles match this week but had an unbelievable week thereafter defeating world number 14 Taylor Fritz and number 9 Felix Auger- Aliassime in the semis.

Van Rijthoven put up a spectacular display to defeat Medvedev 6-4, 6-1 in the final to lift the title, much to the Russian’s disappointment.

Medvedev won his first grass court tile last year at the ATP 250 in Mallorca and will be looking for strong runs this week and next to add to the tally and his confidence.

Goffin Hoping To Turn Back the Clock

David Goffin was once ranked number seven in the world in the ATP rankings.

However, the last few years have been sparred by injuries, poor form, and long lay-offs from the tour.

Goffin had a good run on clay this summer, winning the ATP 250 title in Marrakech and also running Rafael Nadal close at the Madrid Masters.

The Belgian put up a good challenge at the French Open taking out in form American Frances Tiafoe in a tight four-setter but then falling to rising Pole Hubert Hurkacz in the round of 32.

Goffin is no mug on grass either pulling off a spectacular win against Medvedev in the round of 32 at Wimbledon in 2019 and making the finals here in Halle the same year losing out to none other than Roger Federer.

The Belgian will be looking to rekindle his old grass form and have a good run this week, getting ready for Wimbledon in two weeks.

Medvedev v Goffin Prediction and Tip

Medvedev starts as a strong favorite on paper but this match has the making of a tricky encounter. The Russian has had some atypical losses of late and Goffin is always a gritty fighter till the very end.

Expect a close encounter with the new world number one winning in a decider.
