Cilic Ousts Broady

2017 Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic began his grass court campaign with a three-set win over Liam Broady at Queen’s on Monday.

The Croatian, seeded number seventh in the tournament, took the first set with ease and was a break up in the second at 2-3 when the World No. 137 fought back to force the decider.

The 17th-ranked Cilic got the sole break of the third set to win the two-hour-and-nine-minute contest 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. Cilic out-aced Broady 18-2 during the match and won 86% points on his first serve.

The 33-year-old Cilic improved his Queen’s record to 33-11. He won the title here in 2012 and 2018 and finished runner-up in 2013 and 2017. The Croatian also won the Stuttgart Open title last year for his third grass court title and has enjoyed a decent run this year, reaching his maiden semifinal at Roland Garros, and also making teh final four in the two Adelaide events.

The World no. 17 is a win away from reaching a fifth quarterfinal of the season and a ninth in Queen’s. He had also made it to the last eight in 2021.

Bublik Advances After Musetti Retirement

Alexander Bublik moved past Lorenzo Musetti after the latter retired after conceding the first set 3-6.

Musetti injured himself after taking a fall, as a result Bublik advanced to the second round for the second consecutive grass court tournament. He had lost to Andy Murray in the Round of 16 in Stuttgart last week.

The World No. 37 improved his season record to 15-14, which includes a title in Montpellier that he won in February.

The 24-year-old has struggled to win consecutive matches since then. He has a decent 13-9 career record on grass, and is expected to give his all in the second round, but playing against a superior grass court player may stall his run in the second round once again.

Cilic v Bublik Prediction and Tip

Experience and form both are in Cilic’s favour. He also loves playing on grass. Expect the Croat to ease into the quaretrfinals.

Tip: Cilic to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
