Daria Kasatkina was playing a pretty strong event in Berlin but she ran out of steam against Maria Sakkaro who proved much better in that match. A 0-6 3-6 loss never looks good on the resume but this match can largely be explained.
The Russian had some decent moments like battling back from o-3 in the 2nd set to 3-3 but it was not enough to down a very strong Sakkari. Kasatkina is a fairly decent grass player but the two previous matches in Berlin she played both went to three sets.
They were long matches and Kasatkina was left without juice against Sakkari. Nonetheless, she will take a lot of confidence to Bad Homburg where she is the top seed. The Russian is having a breakout season being currently ranked inside the top 10 in the WTA Race.
Some more play before Wimbledon could be crucial for building up that confidence as it generally takes her far. She will need t to avoid those long matches because they do drain her out due to her style of never giving up in a play. She runs a lot during matches and that takes its toll.

Last Hurrah For Petkovic
Andrea Petkovic is playing her final season as she explained a few months ago that it’s time to hang it up. It’s an interesting decision because as she demonstrated this week in Berlin, there is still strong tennis in her. And that counts for all surfaces.
She was pretty solid on clay, she looked good in Berlin but got beaten by the always dangerous Aliaksandra Sasnovich. In Round one she took down Garbine Muguruza with some savvy veteran play and that’s what we can expect from her. To be completely fair, Muguruza has been dreadful for weeks so that win can be explained as well.
Generally, it’s been an okay season for Petkovic. Some good matches but better players do find a way to take her down. I expect something similar in this matchup as well because Kasatkina is simply too good at this moment. Maybe Petkovic can find some inspiration playing at home. We’ll see.
Kasatkina v Petkovic Prediction and Tip
Daria Kasatkina will have a chance to play this event as the top seed. It’s not something she gets to do often but with improved play this year, it was only a matter of time. Petkovic is a solid opponent for her, one that will give her a proper fight but probably not beat her.
It should be a solid match to get the know the conditions and the courts. She will need to be focused because Petkovic will beat you if you give her a chance. I don’t see Kasatkina making that mistakes so back her to get the win.
