Petra Kvitová v Magdaléna Rybáriková Head to Head

The pair have met seven times before, with Kvitová holding a 6-1 lead in matches over her opponent, although most of these wins occurred on the junior tours where the two were near contemporaries.

Petra Kvitová – Potential Champion?

Petra Kvitová should not be discounted as a potential champion in Melbourne. The two-time Wimbledon champion has fought her way back from the knife attack which injured her left-hand two years ago, and is close to the form that has seen her claim 25 senior WTA titles and more than US $27 million in prize money.

She can also claim to be in recent good form. Although beaten in the second round in Brisbane, she has bounced back at this week’s Sydney International beating Angelique Kerber in the quarter-finals to set-up a semi-final match with qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Her best showing came in Melbourne came in 2012 when she reached the semi-final only to lose to Maria Sharapova in three sets.  She is capable of going all the way with the right draw.

Magdalena Rybáriková – A Tricky Opponent

Rybáriková is currently ranked 50 in the world, some 33 places below her all-time high ranking which she achieved just ten months ago.

She has 4 WTA senior titles to her name, although one has to go back to the Washington Open in August 2013 for her last major trophy.

In terms of Grand Slams she has a decent record and reached the 2017 semi-finals at Wimbledon, before eventually losing to the eventual champion Garbiñe Muguruza. She also achieved her best ever result in Melbourne last year, reaching the fourth round before losing to Caroline Wozniacki, who went on to claim the trophy.

Petra Kvitová v Magdalena Rybáriková – Who will Win?

In term of matches on the senior WTA tour, Kvitová holds a perfect record, her most recent victory coming on the grass at Birmingham last year, although she had to come from a set down before claiming victory.

Rybáriková is a dangerous opponent for Kvitová and one who, in her own right, might have been seeded last year. Despite this Kvitová is a player in form, with five WTA titles to her name last year, and potentially another one within her grasp in Sydney this week. It might be a battle and take three sets, but Kvitová should win through.
