Jenson Brooksby likes to play on grass according to him yet his level has been quite shaky so far this year. Only three matches and two of them have been defeats.
This will be his 3rd event on grass this week and his only win came in Den Bosch over Jesper De Jong, a player who is far from a top 100 level. Hugo Gaston beat him and Filip Krjainoic beat him. Not shocking losses but both of these players are lower ranked and the matches weren’t that much competitive.
He really needs a solid run on grass before Wimbledon but it’s going to be tough in Eastbourne. His opponent is far more comfortable on the surface and actually played quite a bit better the previous week. It’s going to be tough for Brooksby but his variety could be key.
He will need his serve as well and it did not do that much damage in the previous events. That needs to change before Wimbledon.

Draper Proving He Belongs
Jack Draper is enjoying his breakout season and the British youngster is now ranked inside the top 100. He won four hard court challengers this year and now on grass, he’s playing some strong tennis as well. After all, he took a set off of Djokovic last year at Wimbledon.
In Queen’s he took down Taylor Fritz in two sets and then lost to Emil Ruusuvuori in the next round. He is certainly proving he belongs in the top flight of tennis and his level of grass is not a surprise. As most British player, Draper had a chance to play on the surface since he was a kid.
Draper is 27-7 this year and 2-2 on grass. Historically he’s 5-9 on grass but he’s still fairly young and only making a name for himself in the world of tennis. He has no particular weakness with both the forehand and backhand being solid. The serve is good enough as well so it’s mostly how well he plays.
Being at home in Eastbourne should help a great deal because he loves playing in front of the fans. We saw it in Queen’s last week.
Brooksby v Draper Prediction and Tip
Despite Brooksby being the better player I’m going to back Draper here because of several reasons. He’s more comfortable on grass generally and his play has been better in the past weeks. He played better and he won notable matches on the surface as well.
He is also playing at home at a venue he knows rather well so that should help him as well. Overall I just think the combination of being more motivated and generally better on grass will be enough. Brooksby is the better player at this stage but grass is very specific.
