She is a former Wimbledon winner, so knows a thing or two about playing on grass but it’s been bit of a surprise Kerber hasn’t played a single tournament on this surface this year.
In fact coming up against Gasanova, Kerber will be playing her first match on grass since her semifinal appearance at Wimbledon last year.
Quite interestingly, Kerber had also won the title here at Bad Homburg last season, defeating the likes of Amanda Anisimova, Petra Kvitova and Katerina Siniakova en route the tournament win.
Which, incidentally, was the second tournament she was participating on grass following her Berlin Open second round loss.
However, with a 11-2 win-loss record on grass last season and a Wimbledon title victory in 2019, it shouldn’t matter too much for Kerber to come into this one with lack of grass court practice.

Gasanova Makes it Through the Qualifiers
There were only eight players who vied for the four qualifying berths at this tournament, and so one round later, Gasanova became one of those four to make it through to the main draw.
She defeated Anna Blinkova in straight sets to set up this meeting with Kerber.
Gasanova had earlier come through the qualifiers in Berlin as well, to set up a first round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. She put up a brave front but fell fighting in three sets.
What’s interesting to note is Gasanova has played in only two other WTA tournaments other than the aforementioned on grass – in Nottingham and at Wimbledon last year.
She went out in three sets in the former, and failed to qualify for the latter as she fell in the second qualifying round.
Can Gasanova cause a bit of a flutter in this one against a former Wimbledon champion?
