Clarke In as a Wild Card

World No. 156 Jay Clarke will be making his second main draw appearance on the tour. He had earlier qualified for the Pune Open, only to lose in the opening round to Kamil Majchrzak.

The 23-year-old has a 2-9 career record on the tour and one of those wins had come in Eastbourne in 2018. Clarke had beaten Ryan Harrison after qualifying for the main draw as a lucky loser.

A year after scoring his maiden win on the tour, Clarke registered his first win at a Grand Slam, defeating Noah Rubin in the first round of Wimbledon before falling to Roger Federer. Since then he hasn’t won a match at the tour-level.

The British right-hander has featured in two Challenger finals this year, winning his third Challenger title in Cuernavaca, Mexico last month. He had finished runner-up in Forli, Italy in January.

Although both of Clarke’s tour level wins have come on grass, he has an overall record of 9-26 on the surface. Recently, he lost the opening round match at Surbiton Challenger, won one and lost one at Nottingham Challenger and lost in the first qualifier at Queen’s. Having received a wild card for Eastbourne, can he pull off a surprise win in the opener?

Nakashima Comes Through Qualifiers

World No. 54 Brandon Nakashima qualified for the main draw with a straight sets win over compatriot Steve Johnson on Sunday.

Nakashima wasn’t broken in the match as he converted two of four break points to win the second qualifying round 6-4, 6-4.

Nakashima had comeback from a set down to beat another American Sam Querrey 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the first qualifying round on Saturday.

The 20-year-old American is 2-1 on grass on the tour this year and 6-2 overall, having reached the quarterfinals in the Surbiton Challenger and the ‘s-Hertogenbosch Open in addition to winning his two qualifying rounds her.

A two-time finalist on the tour last year, Nakashima doesn’t have a lot of experience on grass courts but will be looking to carry his qualifying round form into the main draw in Eastbourne.
