In any other year Kasatkina would be looking forward to Wimbledon and a chance to improve on the quarter-final appearance that she made there in 2018, the same year she made the last eight at French Open.
That remained her best performance in a Grand Slam until a few weeks ago, when she reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros, eventually losing to Iga Świątek.
Having reached the quarter-finals in Berlin last week, she will want to go as far as possible in this tournament if just for her own satisfaction – not to mention the prize money and ranking points – until she takes an enforced break.

Wildcard Niemeier Out Classes American
Niemeier, who hails from Dortmund, just 200 k, from Bad Homburg, was given a wildcard into what is a home event for her.
Kept in the locker room longer than she would have liked due to rain, she showed no ill effects with a commanding performance against the American world number 76, Claire Liu.
The German started strong and raced into a five game lead in the first serve, before Liu offered some resistance with a break oi her own. That was not enough to stop Niemeier soon claiming the set.
Liu then put herself on the backfoot again by dropping the opening game of the second set. The German followed that up with another break, and served out next game.
Kasatkina v Niemeier Prediction and Tip
Although Niemeier out-classed Liu she is likely to find Kasatkina a different proposition altogether. Knowing she will not play Wimbledon this year, Kasatkina will not be holding anything back and should win with comparative ease.
