Kerber Continues March Towards Title Defence

Defending champion Angelique Kerber extended her streak at Bad Hombug to 7-0 after another convincing win on Wednesday to enter the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Kerber, who had begun the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 drubbing of Anastasia Gasanova, ousted Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 6-3 in the second round on Wednesday. The lefty has not been broken in the first two rounds, while she has saved two break points against Gasanova and four against the Italian.

The 2018 Wimbledon champion is 11-9 this season. She had picked up her 14th tour-level title by winning in Strasbourg last month.

That triumph in Strasbourg was a much needed boost for the World no. 18 who had won just two matches leading up to the tournament and lost eight in what was a horrendous start to the season. However, since the title success in Strasbourg, the three-time major winner reached the third round at Roland Garros and has made the quarterfinals in her first grass court tournament of the year. Can she go on to defend her title?

Cornet Holds Off Maria

World no. 44 Alize Cornet held off a stubborn Tatajna Maria in the Round of 16 on Wednesday to march into the last eight.

The Australian Open quarterfinalist was broken early in the first set, but she broke back immediately and then broke again to build a 5-4 lead. She couldn’t serve out the set as the German fought back to keep the set alive. Cornet built a 4-1 lead in the tiebreak and then stayed ahead to take the first set.

Both players held their serve through the first nine games of the second set, before Cornet broke Maria to win the match 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Cornet had also won her first round match in straight sets, beating Anna Kalinskaya 6-2, 6-4.

The 32-year-old Frenchwoman is 11-14 in 2022. She was at her best at the Melbourne slam, reaching her maiden major quarterfinal. This will be the second time this year that she will be competing in a last eight match.
