Isner Keen to Atone for Last Year’s Disappointment

Whenever Wimbledon comes into view, John Isner’s name is in the thick of it. Isner has been involved in two of possibly the most brutal and thrilling matches in the history of the tournament.

In 2010, he played in the marathon 11-hour match that spanned three days, winning the final set by an astonishing scoreline 70-68. But in 2018, he finished on the losing side when he lost to Kevin Anderson in the longest semifinal in Wimbledon history – crossing the six-hour mark.

But despite being part of Wimbledon’s memorabilia, Isner has not enjoyed many of his trips to SW19. In fact, prior to his semifinal run four years ago, he had never gone beyond the third round in his nine previous attempts. And more worryingly for Isner, he lost early in the last two editions –  to Mikhail Kukushkin in 2019, and Nishioka in the first round last year.

The big-serving American did not play any warm-up tournaments during the build-up to Wimbledon this year. He last featured at Roland Garros at the end of May, losing in the third round to Bernabe Zapata Miralles.

Couacaud Qualifies For Maiden Main Draw

Enzo Couacaud qualified for a Grand Slam main draw at the 17th attempt. It was certainly worth the wait as the Frenchman battled past Dimitar Kuzmanov in four sets in the final round of qualifying in Roehampton.

Couacaud had suffered final-round heartbreak twice before at Wimbledon, and after losing the second-set tiebreak, there was a possibility he would collapse. But the Mauritius-born Frenchman held his nerve and played fearless tennis for the next two sets, in a match he only dropped serve twice.

The 27-year-old has a career-high ranking of No. 155, but is currently down at 207. He ran Dan Evans very close at the Nottingham Challenger at the start of the month and lost in two tight sets.

Couacaud has recorded his best results on the ATP’s second tier where he has won two Challenger titles. His best results for the 2022 season include reaching the Bendigo final at the turn of the year. But his qualification for Wimbledon has surely topped it.

Isner v Couacaud Prediction and Tip

Isner possesses one of the most devasting serves in men’s tennis. His power-packed first delivery is almost the equivalent of a free shot. But despite that, he has struggled immensely to close out his matches on this surface.

And he has drawn a very dangerous qualifier in Couacaud who will surely fancy his chances of pushing the American to his absolute limit.

Tip: Couacaud to win a set – Yes: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
