Third Time in Main Draw for Sharma

This is Sharma’s third appearance in the main draw at Wimbledon.

She qualified in 2019, and last year was a lucky loser, but was defeated by Kristyna Pliskova in the first round.

Earlier that year, she won her first WTA title on the clay of Charleston, beating Ons Jabeur in the final. But their career trajectories have been vastly difference since then. Whilst Jabeur is now the world number three, Sharma remains well outside the top 100.

The Australian failed to qualify for both Nottingham and Birmingham, so may have entertained no great hopes when she entered Wimbledon qualifying this time.

But she beat Joanne Zuger of Switzerland, and then battled her way past Irene Burillo Escorihuela of Spain and Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva of Andorra, to earn her place against Maria.

Experienced German Competitor Maria

Maria’s first visit to Wimbledon was back in 2007. In the intervening years, her best performance was back in 2015, when she reached the third round.

That remains the best she has managed at any Grand Slam event in her career

However, earlier this year, four years after her last, she won her second senior WTA title on clay in Colombia, beating the Brazilian Laura Pigossi in the final.

And, two months prior to that she won an ITF event, this time on hard courts, in the USA.

She has played in a number of warm-up grass tournaments, reaching the quarter-final of the ITF event in Surbiton.

Last week on home soil in Bad Homburg, she beat Anastasia Potapova in three sets, before suffering a straight sets defeat to Alize Cornet of France.

Sharma v Maria Prediction and Tip

Sharma has shown little form on grass to suggest she is capable of beating Maria, who is an experienced performer at this level and should have too much know-how for the Australian.

Tip: Maria to win: 4/9 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
