Mertens, Doubles No. 1

Elise Mertens hasn’t had the best of the grass campaigns – at least on the doubles circuit. With just one win in three tournaments (Storm Sanders in the Libema Open first round), it would seem that the Belgian lacks the necessary momentum for a good start in London.

However, being the doubles specialist she is, Mertens did reach the final in Den Bosch and Birmingham – respectively with Veronika Kudermetova and Shuai Zhang.

While she lost in both cases (the second due to a walkover), the 26-year-old ended up becoming the doubles world number one again.

Combined with her 25 doubles titles – including Wimbledon 2021 – Elise has the kind of experience and pedigree that should help her prevail against an out-of-form player like Osorio on any given day.

However, this is easier said than done. Her last two losses came against Catherine McNally and Kirsten Flipkens – both players ranking far below. Osorio is at a far better place than them and will be optimistic of her chances.

A Hapless Spell for Osorio

Camila Osorio, age 20, arrived in London on the back of a four-match losing streak – three spread across the grass campaigns in Nottingham, Birmingham, and Eastbourne.

Barring the match with Maria Sakkari, the remaining two fixtures were not too difficult for the Colombian rising star – who has now dropped to the world number 63 spot – all the way from the early 30s in April.

Osorio’s defeats came at the hands of Lesia Tsurenko and Harriet Dart – and these perhaps can be chalked up to an easiness in the transition from clay to grass. Last year, however, she did reach the third round here as a qualifier.

As for her overall form, Camila did have a decent year overall with a runner-up feat in Monterrey and a semifinal streak in Bogota.

Osorio v Mertens Prediction and Tip

Mertens should be the favourite on odds but given her erratic form, Osorio has a chance to topple the number 24 seed. In all fairness, this match can swing either way and the Colombian does make for a good underdog bet.
