Sorana Cirstea v Aleksandra Krunic Head to Head

It’s 3-1 to Cirstea who last defeated Krunic in Birmingham a couple of weeks back with 6-1, 6-1. Before that, their last meeting took place in Budapest.

Cirstea Hoping for a Deep Run

Number 26 seed Sorana Cirstea is coming on the back of mixed results in the grass swing. Her highlights reel includes the semifinal feat in Birmingham (her third one of the season) – which the Romanian followed with a first-round walkover to Anhelina Kalinina in Eastbourne.

Sorana has never been strong in grass tournaments and the same is evident from her history in Wimbledon, where her best attempts have gotten her as far as round three.

It may be the case this season too, given that her bracket comprises several underdogs – at least until the third round when she may run into Maria Sakkari. Up until then, it should be smooth sailing for the 32-year-old.

However, upset bugs are the norm in majors. Cirstea is not entirely immune from shocking losses, having seen many defeats in 2022 against the players ranked lower than her.

Krunic can Surprise

Aleksandra Krunic, now ranking World No. 107, will be keen on avenging her last couple of losses to Cirstea. The opportunity is as good as any, but the Serbian will need to bring a calm, composed mind bubbling with self-belief.

The 29-year-old has seen some success of late – she won the doubles title in Eastbourne with Magda Linette. On the singles side of things, she reached the second round in Birmingham as a qualifier (upsetting Petra Martic in the opener).

Krunic also has a grass title from the Rosmalen Championships in 2018 while last season in Wimbledon, she was a doubles quarterfinalist.

Although most of Aleksandra’s year so far is marked by early-stage losses, the fact remains that she is a former top 40 player with a few aces under her sleeve. She has stunned the likes of Paula Badosa, Aryna Sabalenka, and Garbine Muguruza in her career – there is no reason why Cirstea can’t be on the list too.

Krunic v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

If there was a time to back the underdog, this is as good as any. Krunic’s chances of winning this one are not too shabby – provided she starts on a strong note. Cirstea, while the odds-on favourite, may find herself facing a much stronger opponent this time around – especially seeing that this is a Grand Slam and the pressure is high.
