Opelka Grinds it Out

There was nothing particularly pretty about Opelka’s first round win over the Spaniard, Carlos Taberner, the world number 98.

However, in a match that stretched out over two days because it could not be completed on Monday due to fading light, he ground it out and won the big points when it mattered.

The first set was dominated by serve, Taberner saving the only break point created. However, two dropped serves in the tie-break gave Opelka a series of set points, one of which he duly converted.

The Spaniard saved four more break points early in the second set, but, when another presented itself a few games later, Opelka seized it and served out to extend his lead.

The third set was three games old and on serve when they paused overnight.

When they returned however, Opelka soon broke again, and, there was noy way back for Taberner from there.

Landmark Win for Van Rijthoven

Prior to Monday, the closest that van Rijthoven had come to a Grand Slam was to be knocked out in the third round of qualifying for the French Open last month.

Now, not only has he made his Wimbledon debut, but he has a win under his belt as well, after beating Federico Delbonis of Argentina, the world number 84, in straight sets.

The first set was close, and although the Dutchman was the first to drop his serve, he recovered the break and it eventually went to a tie-break. Both men had set points but it was van Rijthoven who went on to claim it.

Two early breaks put the qualifier in charge of the second set, and, by now it was almost one way traffic.

Delbonis was broken twice more at the start of the third set, and van Rijthoven could just breeze through the rest of the match after that.

Opelka v Van Rijthoven Prediction and Tip

Whilst van Rijthoven will relish the prospect of playing in the second round of a Grand Slam tournament, Opelka is vastly more experienced at this level, and will be heavily tipped to make the third round.

Tip: Opelka to win: 3/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
