Jelena Ostapenko v Yanina Wickmayer Head to Head

It’s 1-1 between the two players; their last meeting took place in the 2016 St. Petersburg Trophy where Wickmayer won 6-4, 6-3.

Ostapenko Starts Steadily

It was a routine win from Jelena Ostapenko in the Wimbledon opener, except for the fact that her match took place on Tuesday rather than the scheduled Monday.

Given her hectic schedule in the buildup to the Slam, the Latvian would have certainly preferred an extra day of rest in her quest to better her semifinal result at the SW19 in 2018.

That said, it should not be that big of a problem early on. Ostapenko dismissed Oceane Dodin in an hour and 11 minutes with 6-4, 6-4, although, she did commit 25 unforced errors. But on the back of 29 winners – thrice as many as Dodin’s, the 12th seed was able to sail into the second round.

Jelena is definitely primed for a good run here; she was the runner-up in Eastbourne last week where she added her second final of the season.

Wickmayer Survives Zhu

Yanina Wickmayer, age 32, faced Lin Zhu in the first round and beat her 6-4, 6-2 in 83 minutes on Tuesday. It was a far more disciplined performance from the veteran Belgian, who won an impressive 83% of the points behind the first serve and committed just 16 unforced errors.

En route to the main draw, Wickmayer did not drop a set as she dispatched Julia Grabher, Isabella Shinikova, and Su-Jeong Jang.

Looking at her season so far, she took a hiatus from the tour and began playing only in February. Most of her focus has been on the ITF circuit where she reached a sole final in Israel.

Yanina’s other campaigns have ended rather early, including the ones in the Libema Open and ITF Ilkley Challenger.

Ostapenko v Wickmayer Prediction and Tip

Wickmayer is a former world number 12 but that was more than a decade ago. She is now ranked in the mid-600s with her last WTA title coming in 2016.

Ostapenko, meanwhile, has the energy, form, and pedigree needed to win this one comfortably. Plus, grass is her best-performing surface and it is quite unlikely she will face problems early on.

Tip: Ostapenko to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
