Lorenzo Sonego v Hugo Gaston Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players, both having come over the past couple of seasons and Sonego has won both times. Both those matches did go to a third set.

Sonego Overcomes Kudla Challenge

Sonego had made a bit of a mixed start to the grass court swing, as he featured in a tournament in each of the three weeks leading up to Wimbledon.

At the Stuttgart Open, Sonego made it to the quarterfinals where he went down to Matteo Berrettini. At the Queen’s Club competition he lost to Denis Kudla in the opener, the same opponent he was drawn to face here.

And then in Eastbourne, Sonego made the second round before Alex de Minaur got the better of him.

Sonego avenged his loss to Kudla in a difficult five-setter here, defeating the American 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 to reach the second round.

He was on court for three hours and 52 minutes before finally managing to put it across his opponent and getting one step closer to his last Wimbledon’s performance – Sonego had made it as far as the fourth round there.

Gaston Beats Popyrin. Again.

In a repeat of what had happened a week ago, Gaston got the better of Alexei Popyrin to advance to register his first ever win at this Grand Slam.

The world number 66, who had participated at the Hurlingham Exhibition competition last week and defeated Popyrin in the only match he played there, overcame a mid-match scare to make it a second win over the Aussie.

Gaston defeated Popyrin 6-2, 4-6, 0-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 in three hours and 13 minutes to advance.

Interestingly there wasn’t much to choose between the two statistically, what with Gaston winning 68% of the first serve points and 48% of the second, to his opponent’s 61% and 49% respectively.

In fact, Gaston was broken seven times while managing to get back just six breaks of serves but when it mattered he was there, winning those points.

Can he now repeat the dose against Sonego too?

Sonego v Gaston Prediction and Tip

Sonego will start off a favourite in this unlikely second round clash against Gaston and while we could see a bit of a fight, we could be looking at the Italian taking down his opponent.

Tip: Sonego to win AND Both players to win a set: 8/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
