World No. 5 Maria Sakkari stormed into the third round with a second straight convincing performance at this year’s Wimbledon.
The Greek player, who powered past Australia’s Zoe Hives 6-1, 6-4 in the opening round, needed just an hour and 16 minutes to beat Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova 6-4, 6-3 in the second round on Wednesday.
The fifth seed, who broke twice during a series of three breaks in the middle of the first set, maintained the one break advantage to take a one-set-to-love lead.
She continued her dominance in the second with an early break and then clinched the contest by breaking again in the ninth game, converting a match point for a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
A two-time Grand Slam semifinalist, Sakkari is into the third round at the grass-court major for the third time in her sixth appearance. She will now be aiming to reach the Round of 16 for the first time in the tournament.
With the win, she is now 7-3 on grass this year, having reached the semifinals in Berlin and quarterfinals in Nottingham. This is turning out to be her best season on grass and she looks set for going deeper in the third major of the year.

Maria Knocks Out 26th Seed Cirstea
After fighting back from a set down to beat Astra Sharma in the opening round, Germany’s Tatjana Maria scored another three set win on Wednesday, this time knocking out 26th seed Sorana Cirstea in the second round.
The 34-year-old Maria raced to a 5-0 lead in the opening set before Cirstea made a brief fightback winning three games in a row, only to see the German halt the Romanian’s charge by closing out the set.
Cirstea came back in the second set. She didn’t face a single break point but converted 2 of 6 to claim the second set and force the decider.
The Romanian went a double break up early in the third to lead 0-3, but Maria won the next three games to send the set back on serve. Cirstea went up a break again, but Maria responded with a break immediately. The German eventually got the decisive fourth break in the final game to seal the two-hour-and-11-minute match 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.
Ranked No. 103, Maria had registered a come-from-behind win over World No. 136 Sharma in the first round.
This is Maria’s 10th main-draw appearance at Wimbledon, and it’s only the second time she has reached the third round. Can she make her Round of 16 debut at a major with a win on Friday?
