Maria in her Maiden Grand Slam Semifinal

Tatjana Maria has proven over the last two weeks that if you set your mind to something, it is more than possible to reach your dreams.

At age 34, the German is now set to compete in the first Grand Slam semifinal of her career. Up until now, she had never made it past round three in the majors – which she has been competing in since 2007.

It’s not only that but she has achieved this feat after giving birth to her second daughter last April. Tatjana returned to the tour after her maternity leave in July 2021 and has spent the time building her form – alternating between ITF and WTA tours.

As of Wednesday, Maria is 36-16 so far this season – ranked World No. 103. Her highlights include a challenger title in ITF Rome, USA, and her second WTA title which she bagged in Copa Colsanitas.

At the SW19, she has taken this massive experience and momentum and put it to good use.

In the opener, she survived Astra Sharma in three sets and followed it with a similar win over the 25th seed Sorana Cirstea. It is worth noting that Tatjana staged a comeback in the final set after going down 0-3. She took the match 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.

That was followed by a straight-set win over the number five seed Maria Sakkari.

Then, Maria took on Jelena Ostapenko – the in-form Latvian who enjoyed a sensational grass swing. Saving two match points, the German carved the upset with 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.

Her last opponent was Jule Niemeier whom she again beat in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 7-5).

Jabeur, All Ready for the Final

A moment like this has been long in the making for World No. 2 Ons Jabeur.

The 27-year-old, now 35-9 this year with a career-best ranking, has got a chance to add a Grand Slam to her resume. By reaching the semis this week in Wimbledon, she has also become the first North African or Arab woman to make it this far in a major.

A run like this is not entirely surprising – Jabeur has four singles finals to her name in 2022. All are WTA 500 level or above; she won the title in Madrid and Berlin and was a runner-up in Charleston and Rome.

Ons has played with exceptional consistency on all turfs and has truly inspired the next generation of players to rise to the occasion. Moreover, she has spent a fair bit of time dealing with the elite players on the tour and handing them losses – time and again. Some of her victims include Sakkari, Coco Gauff, Belinda Bencic, Simona Halep, and Petra Kvitova.

In London, Jabeur has been phenomenal as she dropped just one set in five matches – a surprise against Marie Bouzkova in the quarterfinal but she managed to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. In the preceding rounds, the Tunisian dispatched Mirjam Bjorklund, Katarzyna Kawa, Diane Parry, and Elise Mertens.

Jabeur v Maria Prediction and Tip

At this stage, anything can happen. Maria is experienced and has got a hint of destiny towards her game but Jabeur has momentum, form, and an exceptional level of mastery on grass that has got her this far.

It is a battle of skill vs. grit – one where Ons is starting as the favourite but Tatjana makes for an underdog bet worth backing. After all, she did beat Sakkari and Ostapenko last week.

All in all, expect a brilliant match of tennis.
