Last year’s semifinalist Jordan Thompson has a 4-4 record at Newport.
After winning just one match in the first three appearances, Thompson beat Cedric-Marcel Strebe (5-4 retired), Yuichi Sugita and Maxime Cressy en route the final four least year before falling to eventual runner-up Jenson Brooksby.
This year, Thompson is 8-13 overall and 2-1 on grass at the tour level. The 28-year-old Aussie, however, has done exceedingly well on grass court Challenger events. He beat Denis Kudla to win the title at Surbiton and finished runner-up to Daniel Evans in Nottingham.
Most recently he competed at Wimbledon, winning his first round match against Roberto Carballés Baena in straight sets. He couldn’t go past the second round though, going down to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Kubler Coming Off Great Wimbledon Campaign
Facing Thompson, will be World No. 99 Jason Kubler, who is coming off his best-ever Grand Slam performance at Wimbledon.
Kubler, who came through the qualifiers, defeated Dan Evans, Denis Novak and Jack Sock in the first three rounds to reach the fourth round of a major for the first time in his career. The 29-year-old’s campaign however ended with a straight sets loss to Taylor Fritz.
Kubler’s been in brilliant form over the last two months. Having reached the second round at Roland Garros after qualifying for the main draw, he went on to win the Challenger title on hard court in Little Rock and finish runner-up in Orlando, before delivering his best at the third major of the year.
He also won two ITF titles in Australia this year. It will be interesting to see if the World No. 99 can maintain his form on his Newport debut.
Thompson v Kubler Prediction and Tip
Thompson is the more experienced of the two and having done well on grass this season, he will be hoping to bring that form to Newport. Expect Kubler to trouble him, but eventually he should edge through.
