Casper Ruud will be aiming to defend his Bastad title as he begins his 2022 campaign on Wednesday.
The World No. 5 didn’t enjoy his time out on grass, where he won just one of his three matches. But he would be happy to be back on clay, where he has been a real threat over the last couple of years.
This year, Ruud has a 21-6 record on clay and that includes two titles in Buenos Aires and Geneva. He also made it to his maiden Grand Slam final at Roland Garros, only to lose to Rafael Nadal.
The Norwegian also reached his first ATP 1000 final this year, beating his Wednesday’s opponent on his way to the final in Miami, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.
The eight-time tour-level champion has a 5-2 record in Bastad. One of his five titles last year came in this tournament after he defeated Federico Coria in the title clash. As he bids to retain the title, the 23-year-old will be looking to get off to a good start.

Cerundolo Downs Sousa
World No. 39 Francisco Cerundolo defeated qualifier Pedro Sousa in the first round on Tuesday.
The Argentine built a 4-1 lead in the first set, thanks to a double break, before Sousa attempted a comeback by pulling a break back. Cerundolo steadied himself to see off the first first set without dropping another serve.
Cerundolo then broke in the first game of the second set, but Sousa restored parity in the fourth game to stay on serve. The Argentine, however, didn’t allow Sousa to find his way back into the contest. He ran away with the match by winning the last four games of the set. The 6-4, 6-3 win came in an hour and 27 minutes. Cerundolo saved 7 of 9 break points and converted 5 of 13 in the contest.
A semifinalist in Rio and a quarterfinalist in Buenos Aires, Cerundolo improved his season record to 7-6 on clay. This was his first main draw win in Basted after falling in the opening round on his debut last year.

Although Cerundolo is a decent player, Ruud shouldn’t have much trouble in dispatching the Argentine.
