Danilovic Saves MP Before Battling Past Kalinskaya

Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic, who has not played on surfaces other than clay this year, improved her season record to 13-5 across levels, as she marched into her first tour-level quarterfinal with a tough three-set win over Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya.

The World No. 124 was broken in the very first game of the match, but she responded immediately to break the Russian in the next game and broke again later to take the first set.

Danilovic came back from a break down in the second set as well, but it Kalinskaya who nudged ahead with a second break, forcing the decider.

The Russian began the third set well, breaking Danilovic twice and building a 1-4 lead. But the Serb wasn’t prepared to give up. She got a break back and then saved a match point on Kalinskaya’s serve at 4-5 (30-40) to draw level. With the momentum shifting, Danilovic held serve in the next game and then broke Kalinskaya a third time to claim the match 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

Danilovic had breezed past Joanne Zuger and Anastasia Zakharova in the qualifiers to make the main draw. She continued that form in the opening round, defeating Misaki Doi 6-3, 6-3

Waltert Into Her Maiden WTA Quarterfinal

Simona Waltert’s dream run continued as the 21-year-old Swiss wild card reached her maiden WTA quarterfinal with a second straight three-set victory on Thursday.

It was in Lausanne last year where Waltert won her maiden double title on debut. This year again, she continues to blossom in her home tournament, but this time she is making a name in singles event.

On Tuesday, Waltert had saved three match points in the final set tiebreak against World no. 7 and Australian Open runner-up Danielle Collins, to earn her first top 10 victory. She carried that form into the second round on Wednesday, defeating Spain’s Cristina Bucșa 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 and reaching her first-ever WTA singles quarterfinal.

Waltert had 24 break point opportunities in the second round match and she converted 9 of them. Her opponent, Bucsa, had 13 breaking chances and Waltert saved six of them during the two-hour-plus contest.

It will be interesting to see if Waltert can keep her dream run going. She is on a seven match win streak, having won the ITF title in Amstelveen last week.

Danilovic v Waltert Prediction and Tip

Danilovic is more experienced but she will be wary of Waltert’s recent form. Expect a close match with Danilovic edging past the Swiss.
