Bondar Knocks Out Trevisan

Anna Bondar, age 25, is now carrying the hopes of a nation as the sole Hungarian left in the field. She has certainly done well so far; if anything, she has solidified her chances of going the distance in Budapest.

On Friday, she played the number two seed and reigning French Open semifinalist Martina Trevisan and handed her a 6-4, 6-1 defeat. It was one of her biggest wins of the season as well.

She posted victories over Jesika Malečková and Despina Papamichail in the preceding rounds in straight sets. With this, Bondar has now made it to her third semifinal of the season. Her tally now is 25-16.

Most recently, Anna was a semifinalist in the Contrexeville Challenger and WTA Rabat. Between these two results, the current World No. 53 (career-best ranking for her) lost her opening-round bouts in the French Open, WTA Bad Homburg, and Wimbledon.

Nonetheless, she has delivered an impressive turnaround at home and is now the favourite to win.

A Rare Semifinal for Pera

Bernarda Pera of the United States will compete in what is set to be a rare semifinal on the WTA tour for her.

Now ranking World No. 130, her previous best season result came in the Karlsruhe Challenger, where she was the runner-up. Since that tournament in May, Pera bagged just one win in the subsequent five tournaments.

She arrived in Budapest, all set to compete as a qualifier. After navigating fixtures against Katarina Zavatska and Sofia Shapatava in the prelims, Bernarda moved on to dismiss the likes of Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Marina Ribera, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the main draw. Impressively, the 27-year-old left-handed player did it all without dropping a set.

With this, Pera has now improved her tally to 16-13.

Overall, 2022 has been a bit of a breakthrough for her as she won her maiden WTA title in Melbourne Set 2 (doubles) and later reached the final in the singles in Karlsruhe.

Pera v Bondar Prediction and Tip

This match is Bondar’s to lose, but in all fairness, anything can happen.

Pera is a former top 60 player who will fancy her chances, but Anna has the home advantage. Expect a cracking game of tennis.
