With Wimbledon’s ban on Belarusian and Russian players taking effect during the past couple of weeks, Aliaksandra Sasnovich was one of the players hit hard.
The 28-year-old fine-tuned her game nicely on the lawns, reaching a quarterfinal in Berlin and pishing eventual champion Ons Jabeur to three sets. While grass is far from Sansovich’s best surface, she has actually improved markedly in the last couple of seasons.
Now her attentions turn to the brief summer clay court season after Wimbledon, and it has been a very modest run of form coming to Hamburg. Sasnovich was beaten by Bernarda Pera in the second round of Budapest a few days ago. It is in pale contrast to the form she displayed during the build to Roland Garros and the Major itself.
Sasnovich memorably reached the second week of the clay slam for the first time. And it remains to be seen if she can improve on her 10-6 record on clay.

Schunk Earns Wild Card
Nastasja Mariana Schunk is not a popular name on the WTA tour, but that is because she has played a grand total of five matches on the main tour in her young career. Will she earn her very first main draw win on home soil?
While the bookies seem to be giving a chance to the unheralded 18-year-old, it is worth noting that Schunk has played with distinction on the ITF tour. Schunk has captured two titles at that level in 2021, and has been to two more finals this season, finishing runner-up at the Joue-Les-Tours ITF and on the clay of Wiesbaden.
She has also been able to qualify in each of her last two Grand Slams and is quietly making strides in the WTA rankings.
The German is less than 50 spots away from entering the top 100, but before she can contemplate that idea, she will need to deliver on all fronts when she takes on the experienced Sasnovich.

Sasnovich should have the upper hand in this matchup, but we should emphasize the quality Schunk brings to the table. The young German took a set from Simona Halep at this year’s French Open and possesses a high topspin forehand that could prove detrimental to Sasnovich. The upset is worth considering here.
