Pablo Carreno Busta made his return to tennis last week in Bastad and he played fairly well. It was a run to the semifinal where Francisco Cerundolo proved much better.
That defeat was a bit surprising to me because he was blown off the court quite easily. After watching Cerundolo lift the trophy it looks a bit better on paper but nonetheless, it was a successful week for Busta. He’ll come with confidence to Hamburg where he played well last year.
He ended up with the trophy and this year he’ll try to do it again but it will be tough due to a very strong field. Hamburg suits his play and he’s played fairly well this year with a 21-16 score overall. 10-8 is the score on clay which is okay but he had some very poor moments.
A tricky test waits for him in round one against Nardi but if he passes it he’ll only get strong. The most crucial match for him will be round one.

Nardi Wins Qualifiers
Luca Nardi had to play the qualifiers to get into the main draw and the young Italian passed the test with flying colours. It’s been somewhat of a breakout for the Italian on the challenger level lately with his play rapidly improving.
When you’re a young player it’s mostly about confidence and his is improving at a stunning pace. He’s already inside the top 200 so it’s not hard for me to imagine that he could enter the top 100 with a couple of strong finishes on the challenger Tour.
He’s 21-12 overall so far and 12-9 on clay. ATP Tour experience is limited for him but wins over Pedro Sousa and Ricardas Berankis certainly proved he can play with some of the lower-ranked players at the moment. Carreno-Busta will be a good test for him and if he somehow wins, well, watch out.
Carreno Busta v Nardi Prediction and Tip
So obviously Carreno Busta is favoured here because he’s coming back to a venue where he was excellent last year. He also had a solid outing in Bastad a couple of days ago thanks to some decent play. His opponent lacks experience on the ATP tour and could easily get a bit nervous.
Overall this should be Busta winning it and if he doesn’t, well, that’s quite an upset.
