Continuing her good form, word No. 48 Caroline Garcia fought back from a set down to beat fellow Frenchwoman Chloe Paquet in the first round of the Palermo Open.
Garcia, who had an 11-2 in her last three tournaments, twice went up a break in the first set on Tuesday, but Paquet got the break back on both the occasions to take the set into the tiebreak.
The World no. 103 dominated the tiebreak to take a one-set-to-love lead. Garcia, however, rebounded in the second set, breaking her opponent twice and keeping her chances alive in the match.
The deciding set saw Garcia build a 4-0 lead, before Paquet won two in a row to make things interesting. But Garcia stalled the latter’s comeback effort by winning the last two games and sealing the two-hour-and-12-minute contest 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-2.
The win improved Garcia to 21-13 in 2022. In her last three tournaments, the 28-year-old won her eighth career title in Bad Homburg, reached the fourth round at Wimbledon and made a semifinal appearance in Lausanne. Garcia had also reached the semifinals in Lyon and quarterfinals in Sydney this year.

Cocciaretto Breezes Past Errani
World no. 111 Elisabetta Cocciaretto dispatched fellow Italian Sara Errani in just 57 minutes to sail into the second round in Palermo.
World No. 127 Errani, who won a WTA 125K tournament earlier this month and was a runner-up at a WTA125 event last month, couldn’t hold serve even once in the match as the 21-year-old Cocciaretto demolished the 35-year-old 6-1, 6-0.
A quarterfinalist in Budapest last week, Cocciaretto has done extremely well at the lower level clay court tournaments this year.
The Italian was a finalist in WTA 125 in Makarska Croatia last month. In addition, she won two ITF clay court events and finished runner-up in one. With a 27-8 clay court record from all tournaments this year, she will be hoping to reach a consecutive quarterfinal on the tour.

Form and experience at the top level both favour Garcia in this contest. Expect the local hope to put up a fight but the Frenchwoman should advance to the last eight.
