Second seed Yulia Putintseva outplayed Australia’s Jaimee Fourlis in the opening round on Tuesday.
The Kazakh, ranked no. 39th in the world, needed just an hour and 15 minutes for a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
While Putintseva converted four break points in the first set and two in the second, her opponent could create just two breaking chances in the match. Although she converted both of them in the opening set, she couldn’t find a way to reach Putintseva’s level.
The two-time champion and three-time runner-up on the tour was a semifinalist in Budapest last week. She also made it to the final four in Istanbul this year and the Round of 16 in Rome.
In Palermo, she had lost in the opening round in her previous meetings, but this time has a good chance of reaching the last eight.

Parry Holds off Davis
World no. 86 Diane Parry put up a gutsy performance to oust American Lauren Davis on Tuesday.
The intriguing contest began with a pair of breaks before the 19-year-old Frenchwoman took control of the match, winning four games in a row and building a 5-2 lead. Davis prevented Parry from closing out the set, making a comeback in the contest. She forced the opening set tiebreak, which was eventually won by Parry.
In the second, Parry led from start to finish to win the contest 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
With the win Parry is now 15-17 across levels this year. While her best tour-level showing were her third round appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon, she is yet to reach a quarterfinal on the tour this season. She has reached one at the lower level, making it to the final four in Gaiba WTA 125.
