Pedro Martinez v Elias Ymer Head to Head

They played twice and Ymer won both matches. The most recent one came in 2019 in Brazil.

Martinez Back to Winning Ways

Pedro Martinez returned to winning ways after securing the round one win over compatriot Carlos Taberner. The Spaniard opted to skip the entirety of the grass season by playing on clay instead but he did not play too well. Generally, it’s been somewhat of a lacklustre year for him.

He’s only 18-18 on the year and that’s far below the level he showed last year. To be fair, he played many more challenges last year with the majority of this year’s matches on the ATP Tour. Still, he’s pretty close to getting into the top 50 and a good run here could do the trick.

To secure the quarterfinal, Martinez will only need to beat a player he never beat again. It should be simple enough after a good start and the win over Taberner.

Ymer Downs Paire

Elias Ymer downed Benoit Paire in round one by virtue of the French player retiring from the match. Until then, the Swedes was destroying Paire who returned to tennis but did not play much better than he played so far this year.

Ymer played well in Bastad last week as well and it seems like some of that confidence persisted to Gstaad as well with a chance to reach the quarterfinal. Before the Paire matchup, Ymer won two qualifiers against some solid players including a win over Moutet who was playing well lately.

Ymer loves to attack and his play has very little variety to it. That makes him dangerous to players when his game is on and seemingly he has it right now.

The serve will be key for him because he can serve well but doesn’t do it that often. If he can keep the rallies short he’ll have a chance.

Martinez v Ymer Prediction and Tip

Pedro Martinez never beat Elias Ymer before as he lost both matches they played but he’ll have a very good chance this time around.

Martinez played well last year during this part of the season and he seemingly found something this year in Gstaad as well. I think he’s the better player so I’ll back him to win this one.
