After dumping out the defending champion Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the opening round, World no. 81 Bernarda Pera demolished Switzerland’s Joanne Zuger in straight sets on Wednesday to extend her unbeaten streak to nine matches, including qualifiers.

The American left-hander, who won her maiden WTA title by defeating Aleksandra Krunić in the final in Budapest last week, had entered the main draws of the Hungarian Open through the qualifying rounds.

Pera, who was also a finalist in the WTA 125 in Karlsruhe Open, has improved her season record to 22-14 and her clay record to 18-7 from all levels.

The 27-year-old American, who defeated Ruse 6-0, 6-4 in the first round, needed just an hour to beat the Swiss qualifier 6-1, 6-1 in the second round on Wednesday. Pera saved all four break points that she faced against Zuger and converted 5 of 8 to advance a second tour-level quarterfinal of the season.

Siniakova Storms Into the Last Eight

Katerina Siniakova stormed into the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-1 shellacking of Brazil’s Laura Pigossi in the second round on Tuesday.

The World no. 96, who had not reached a quarterfinal since making the last eight in Cleveland in August last year, needed just 70 minutes to beat the World no. 120.

Sinakova saved all four break points that she faced in the contest, while converting 2 of 4 in the first set and all three in the second set to move into the last eight.

The Czech player, who won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon doubles titles this year, had begun the tournament with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over second seed Daria Kastakina in the opener.
