Molcan Shocks Carreno-Busta

Following a third round appearance at Wimbledon earlier this season, Molcan is back playing on clay – a surface that is his favourite by far.

Having reached two clay court competition finals this season, Molcan kick-started his campaign here in Hamburg with a punishing win against local lad Marko Topo, setting up a second round encounter with Pablo Carreno-Busta.

And while Molcan was 6/4 underdog to overcome his Spanish opponent, he did manage to do just that and seal another quarterfinal berth in a clay court tournament this season.

Molcan won 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5) in a match lasting two hours and 31 minutes but more importantly after being 3-1 down in the final set. He also saved five break-points in total while serving at 4-4 and 5-5 before clinching the tie-breaker off his first match-point.

Can Molcan now take that step closer to another ATP final?

Coric Coming into His Own

Coric’s fall in the rankings has been well-chronicled after the Croat had missed out on the majority of the previous season because of injury issues. He has taken his time getting back but it does look like the former world number 12 is showing signs of coming back into his own.

Having already won the Parma Challenger title on clay last month, Coric has now clinched back to back matches in an ATP top-level tournament for the first time this season.

In the first round, Coric sent Laslo Djere packing from being a set down before crushing Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-4 in the second.

Both times, Coric was the second-favourite going into the encounter and won, making the bookmakers change things around for this one. He is 4/5 favourite heading into this quarterfinal and having tasted Challenger success recently should also give him that confidence of playing back to back matches in a week.

Molcan v Coric Prediction and Tip

While Molcan is a way higher ranked player, Coric starts off a favourite in this one. That is not saying Molcan won’t have any say in the encounter but we could be looking at a Coric win in three.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 5/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
