Peruvian Number One Varillas

Although Peru is not known for producing leading tennis players, Varillas has been steadily progressing up the rankings, and he is now threatening to break in the top 100 for the first time in his career.

He can attribute his rise to his prowess on clay on the Challenger tour, where he has appeared in five finals in the past 18 months, although the only one that he won was in Chile last October.

In May he made  his Grand Slam debut at the French Open after coming through qualifying, but was beaten in the first round.

There was a period after that where she struggled for results, especially on grass, but he enjoyed better fortune in Gstaad last week.

After again coming through qualifying, he reached the quarter-finals, beating the world number 19 Roberto Batuista-Agut in the process, before he was beaten by Dominic Thiem.

Taberner in the Middle of a Bad Run

Another player who owes his rise up the world rankings in recent years to his success on clay on the Challenger tour, Taberner won his eighth title at that level in Italy in March.

That followed a month after he recorded his first and second wins of his ATP season at the Chile Open.

However, his last win on the major tour came back in Estoril in April, and he has suffered a string of first round defeats since then.

The latest in what has been a disappointing sequence came last week in Gstaad, beaten in straight sets by compatriot Pedro Martinez.

Varillas v Taberner Prediction and Tip

Although Taberner is the higher ranked of the pair, he is in the middle of a bad run right now, and Varillas might be feeling the more confident of the pair after his exploits in Switzerland last week. The Peruvian might just edge this.

Tip: Varillas to win in straight sets: 8/9 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
