19-year-old Shelton hasn’t played a lot of tennis even at the Futures and Challengers level, with this being just his fifth tournament of the season.
His earlier four this year and the remaining ones last year were all a part of the Challenger and Futures circuit, but a few solid showings in them has been enough for him to earn himself a wildcard into this one.
Shelton had earlier made it as far as the semifinal at the Little Rock Challenger and then became a finalist at the Rome Challenger despite going in as a qualifier. Last year, the American player had won a Futures event – his only professional title till date.
Interestingly, Shelton starts off a favourite in this one despite his total lack of top-level experience.

Ramkumar in a Shock Entry into the Main Draw
Once ranked 111th in the world, Ramkumar has fallen to 229th and that has been down to a very poor 2022 season in which he has barely won anything.
In fact, even at the Challenger level, Ramkumar has gotten past just three of his opponents this season, marking an underwhelming series of performances leading into the qualifiers here in Atlanta.
Which is why it came it came as no surprise Ramkumar was 4/3 underdog in his opening qualifier against Stefan Kozlov but more vitally 11/2 against Britain’s Jack Draper in the second.
He dropped just one against Kozlova and while Draper pushed the Indian player into the third set, Ramkumar triumphed in a tie-breaker to carve out a victory. Can he now notch up a shock main draw win in an ATP 250 competition after having a forgettable season?

Shelton’s main draw debut isn’t taking away from the fact that Ramkumar has struggled all year and will find it difficult to get going. We anticipate this to be a three-set thriller with Shelton holding the edge in the final set.
