Pavlyuchenkova v Collins – Head to Head

This is the first time that the two players will be up against each other on the tour.

Pavlyuchenkova’s Second Consecutive Appearance in the Quarters

For the second time in a row, the World No. 44 has made it to the quarterfinal at the Australian Open. This time around, she was handed a very tricky draw and the Russian performed rather brilliantly to dominate her bracket.

Her first major win came in the second round when she met the ninth seed Kiki Bertens. Over there, she defeated the Dutch 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to move to the next round. Pavlyuchenkova then met Aliaksandra Sasnovich and dispatched the Belarusian with 6-0, 6-3.

Her most impressive performance came in the fourth round when she met the fifth seed Sloane Stephens. Despite starting as the underdog, the reigning WTA Strasbourg champion stunned the American No. 1 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-3, in two hours and 34 minutes.

The Russian produced 46 winners in comparison to Sloane’s 28 although, she committed 53 unforced errors – twice as many as the American’s. Despite these many errors, Pavlyuchenkova got the break points at crucial stages to seal one of the biggest wins of her career.

Her performance has certainly taken many surprise, given that she lost in the opening rounds in the WTA Hobart and Shenzhen earlier this year.

Collins’ Biggest Victory of Her Career

Danielle Collins is heading into this quarterfinal fixture after delivering the biggest upset of the tournament. She knocked out the second seed, the World No. 2 Angelique Kerber with 6-0, 6-2, in under an hour.

Kerber was definitely not at the top of her game – she won a mere 26% of her first service points and had only 6 winners. Collins, on the other hand, kept her first service win rate at 65% and produced 29 winners. She also won six out of seven break points to seal the victory.

This is the third time in Melbourne that the American has knocked out a seeded player. Prior to this, she moved past the 19th seed Caroline Garcia with 6-3, 6-2. Before that, she met the 14th seed Julia Goerges in the first round whom she defeated in three weary sets.

Collins, who is still seeking her first WTA singles title, ended the previous season as the World No. 35 after starting the year outside the top 150. She was a semifinalist in the Miami Open and WTA San Jose.

The 25-year-old also achieved some success on the 125K Series circuit but now, it appears that she has upped her game by a huge margin.

Pavlyuchenkova v Collins Tips & Predictions

Both the players started this season on a disappointing note and turned all of that around in Melbourne. They are evenly matched for this fixture and it can very well go to three sets. It is hard to predict a winner here but we have definitely got an epic game in our hands.
