Noskova Continues to Impress

Seventeen-year-old Linda Noskova edged past Alize Cornet in a thrilling three-set contest on Thursday to reach her first WTA quarterfinal.

The victory extended the Czech player’s unbeaten run to seven matches, a series that began in the opening round of ITF Versmold in Germany earlier this month. She went on to win that clay court contest by defeating Ysaline Bonaventure in the final, thus lifting her second ITF trophy of the year and a sixth overall.

The Czech wild card carried her impressive form into the WTA 250 event in Prague, beating lucky loser Natalia Vikhlyantseva 6-2, 3-1 (retired) in the opening round.

On Thursday, she punched above her weight, knocking out the fifth seed and World no. 38 Cornet.

Noskova won just 47% of total points in the match (99 of 209)and converted just four 12 break points, against the Frenchwoman who converted 5 of 9.

But Noskova won the key moments, getting a decisive third break in the 11th game in the first set and then stalling a valiant comeback effort from Cornet in the third set tiebreak.

After building a 6-2 lead in the tiebreak, Noskova squandered four match points as Cornet drew level. The latter saved another match point but the Czech eventually converted her sixth match point for a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (9-7) victory..

Hibino Upsets Krejcikova

Having presented with an opportunity to enter the main draw as a lucky loser, Nao Hibino has taken the opportunity with both hands.

The Japanese player raced past Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu in the opening round on Monday and then fought back from a set down to take down second seed Barbora Krejcikova in the second round on Thursday.

The match began with five consecutive breaks of serve with Krejcikova getting three of them. She got a fourth break in the ninth game to take a one-set lead.

The second set was a very close one. The Czech had a chance to serve out the match at 3-5, but Hibino got the break back a second time in the set to stay alive and then clinched the set in the tiebreak.

It was Krejcikova who was the first to break in the third as well, but Hibino responded with an immediate break and then surged ahead with a break in the eighth game. Serving for the match at 5-3 in the final set, she fell 15-40 behind but clawed her way back, saving four break points in the four-deuce final game for a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory in two hours and 47 minutes.

Hibino had won her first qualifying round against Rebecca Šramková but lost a three-setter to Oksana Selekhmeteva. However, having made the main draw as a lucky loser, she has looked in amazing touch.

The World No. 251 is in her first tour-level quarterfinal since Charleston last year and will be aiming to reach her first semifinal since Strasbourg in 2020.
